Getting off GLP-1s

The Live Well Transition Program by Restoration Healthcare

GLP-1 weight loss medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide have helped many people jumpstart their weight loss journeys. But what happens after you stop? Like most weight loss programs, GLP-1s won’t help you keep the weight off.

When it’s time to stop injections, it’s important to have a plan. Without the right support, research shows most people regain roughly two-thirds of the weight they lost within a year of discontinuing treatment.

At Restoration Healthcare in Troy, our Live Well Transition Program is designed to help you maintain your results naturally, without pharmaceutical dependence. Over three months, we provide the clinical oversight, nutrition guidance, and lifestyle strategies you need to keep your metabolism balanced and your appetite under control.

Pay in full $3,000 or $1,000/month for 3 months.

What Happens When You Stop GLP-1s

Discontinuing these medications can trigger several changes that make weight maintenance harder:

GLP-1 medications work in part by signaling your brain to feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer. When you stop taking them, this appetite-suppressing effect fades, and your natural hunger cues return in full force. Without the right strategies in place, this can make it harder to maintain portion control and resist overeating, especially in social situations or during times of stress.

One of the ways GLP-1s help control appetite is by slowing down gastric emptying—the rate at which food leaves your stomach and enters your small intestine. Once off the medication, your digestion speeds back up. While this is a normal process, it often means you’ll feel hungry again sooner after eating, which can lead to more frequent snacking and a higher daily calorie intake.

As your body readjusts its hunger and satiety signals, you may find yourself drawn to quick-energy foods, especially refined carbohydrates and sugary snacks. These cravings can be particularly challenging because high-carb foods cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by crashes, which can trigger even more hunger. Managing these cravings through strategic nutrition planning is essential to avoid slipping into old habits that can derail your progress.

These shifts are normal, but without a structured approach, they can quickly lead to weight regain.

Our Science-Based Lifestyle Program for Long-Term Success

The good news: evidence shows that combining gradual medication tapering with consistent exercise, targeted nutrition, and behavior change strategies can dramatically improve weight maintenance after GLP-1 use.

Our program uses functional and lifestyle medicine principles to help you transition smoothly—so you can sustain your weight loss and overall health for years to come.

The Live Well Transition Program — $3,000 Pay in Full

Monthly payment plans available $1,000/month for 3 months | $3,000 total.

What’s Included:

The program begins with a thorough evaluation of your current health status, body composition, metabolic rate, and lifestyle habits. We look at your weight history, GLP-1 usage, nutrition patterns, and activity level to understand what has worked and where challenges may arise. From there, we create a personalized step-down strategy that gradually transitions you off medication while supporting appetite control and metabolic balance.

Using advanced SOZO bioimpedance technology, we measure more than just weight. You’ll receive precise readings on muscle mass, body fat percentage, hydration status, and other key indicators of health. With three measurements taken over the course of your program, we can track progress, spot early warning signs of muscle loss or fat gain, and adjust your plan to keep you moving toward your goals.

Labwork is included in the program fee.

At the start of your transition, we conduct comprehensive lab work to evaluate your metabolic health markers, including blood sugar regulation, lipid profile, inflammatory markers, and nutrient levels. These insights help us identify any imbalances or risk factors that could interfere with weight maintenance and allow us to fine-tune your nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

Patient is responsible only for the local blood draw fee (approximately $100 at any area Labcorp or Quest Lab).

We also recommend the Boston Heart Nutrition & Wellness Panel via RUPA Health.

Over the course of three months, you’ll meet virtually with your dedicated health coach for four 20-minute sessions. These in-depth conversations cover nutrition strategies, exercise planning, mindset shifts, stress reduction, and habit-building techniques. Your coach serves as both an educator and motivator, helping you navigate the changes your body experiences post-GLP-1 and setting you up for long-term success.

We design a personalized nutrition plan tailored to your basal metabolic rate, calorie needs, and lab results. This plan helps you maintain balanced blood sugar, manage cravings, and preserve lean muscle mass. We also teach you how to adjust your food intake for different phases of your transition so you can confidently manage your nutrition beyond the program.

We may use RUPA’s meal-planning tools where appropriate.

The program includes two 45-minute follow-up appointments with Dr. Walter for lab review and care plan adjustments.

Staying consistent is easier when you have regular support. We’ll check in with you each week to review your progress, address challenges, and make necessary adjustments. In addition, you’ll have email access to your coach for questions, encouragement, and quick tips whenever you need them.

Physician-supervised tapering guidance where dosage and timing are discussed during consults.

You’ll gain access to curated articles, videos, and guides covering nutrition, stress, sleep, exercise, and long-term weight maintenance. These include also essential lifestyle factors like sleep quality, stress management, movement, and recovery. These tools help you address the full spectrum of health so your results are sustainable long after your transition.

These shifts are normal, but without a structured approach, they can quickly lead to weight regain.

Can I Just Stay on GLP-1s Forever? No

GLP-1 medications can be effective for weight loss, but their long-term use—especially in people without diabetes—is still being studied. Staying on them can be costly and may cause persistent side effects like nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. Extended use may also contribute to muscle loss, which can slow metabolism, and in rare cases has been linked to pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or thyroid concerns.

Because these drugs suppress appetite and slow digestion, prolonged use can make it harder for your body to naturally regulate hunger once you stop. At Restoration Healthcare in Troy, our goal is to help you transition off GLP-1s while building the lasting habits that keep your results without lifelong medication.
